479The United Arab Emirates was proclaimed on December 2, 1971. The Government of Indonesia recognizes the young UAE and open diplomatic relations in 1976. In 1977 , President Suharto visited UAE to have bilateral meeting with the then President of UAE Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan . As a follow up of the visit, on October 28, 1978 , the Government of Indonesia opened its embassy in Abu Dhabi , temporarily headed by charge d’affaires. On March 29, 1993, Indonesia sent its first Ambassador to UAE.

UAE opened its embassy in Indonesia on June 10, 1991, headed by an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary .

Along with the growing bilateral relations between the two countries, the Government of Indonesia opened its Consulate General in Dubai ( February 2003 ), then followed by the opening of Indonesian Trade Promotion Centre ( ITPC ) also in Dubai and the Indonesian Investment Promotion Center in Abu Dhabi .

Exchange of visit (Head of State Level) between Indonesia and UAE :

  1. The visit of President Suharto to the UAE on October 18, 1977
  2. The visit of President Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to Indonesia on 19 – 23 May 1990
  3. The visit of President Suharto to the UAE on October 31, 1995
  4. The visit of President Abdulrahman Wahid to the UAE on February 24, 2001
  5. The visit of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to the UAE on May 1, 2006

In addition to the Heads of State’s level, the exchange of visits between Government Officials, Member of Parliaments, Governors and other dignitaries of both countries are as well intense and able to enhance and and strengthen the bilateral relations in all aspects.

Economy

Along with the establishment of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates ( UAE ) in 1976 , trade and investment cooperation between the two countries has developed quite well. In 2012 , the UAE is Indonesia’s 21st export destination country or second largest in the middle east, after Saudi Arabia (non-oil and gas commodity). Indonesia ‘s non-oil exports to the UAE in the period 2010 – 2012 has experienced a growth trend of 4.67 % .

In 2012 the total trade between Indonesia – UAE stood at USD 3.3 billion, 30.59 percent increase compared from the year 2011 (USD 2.5 billion). In 2013 ( January-June), the total trade between the two countries has reached $ 1.71 billion, 1.93 percent increase compared to the same period in 2012 ($ 1.74 billion). UAE’s investment in Indonesia (2012) reached USD 32.35 million (20th largest source of foreign direct investment in Indonesia).

Based on those facts, Indonesia’s main priority in its economic relations with UAE is to increase investment value as well as non-oil trade value. To that end , the Embassy of Indonesia in Abu Dhabi conduct active economy diplomacy both in the field of investment and trade .

Information, Culture and Education

In the field of information, both countries has signed agreement of cooperation between the national Antara news agency and WAM news agency on February 19, 2001 (updated on May 22, 2005). Indonesian society in the UAE totaled around 72,000 people (Source : Statistics Ministry of Interior ) .

In the field of social development, in late 2004, the Government of UAE through Red Crescent Society, has provided assistance in the form of post-tsunami housing development project in Lampaseh “Emirates Village”, Aceh as many as 469 units of houses and housing projects ” Sheikh Khalifa City ” as many as 1033 units of houses for victims tsunami disaster in Aceh. In addition, the UAE Government has also provided assistance to the victims of the earthquake in Yogyakarta as much as U.S. $ 4 million .

Since 1998, GOI c.q. Ministry of Religious Affairs participate in Hifdzul Qur’an contest “Dubai International Holy Quran Award” every year in Dubai. UAE through the Zayed Foundation has also provided assistance to the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University as much as U.S. $ 32,000 .

In the field of education, since 1995/1996, the Government UAE provides scholarships for Indonesian students to study in Ma’had Al Islami in Al Ain (elementary to high school level). As of 2014, there are 42 Indonesian students (junior and senior level) studying in Ma’had ‘ Ilmi Al Islami School in Al ‘ Ain and 8 Indonesian students study at the University level in the UAE,  7 students are studying in the UAE University and 1 at the University of Sharjah.
