After a series of negotiations, Indonesia and the UAE finally agreed to sign Agreement on Extradition and the Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance between the two countries. The Agreements was signed by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Amir Syarifudin and the Minister of Justice of the UAE, H.E. Dr. Al Hadef Jua’an Al Daheri, on February 2, 2014 in Abu Dhabi.
The Agreement on Extradition makes it possible for each partner country to request its convicted citizens to be returned and serve their time in their own home country, meanwhile Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance regulates a number of legal cooperation between the two countries, among other the obligation for partner countries to provide legal assistance to its partner country’s citizen anytime it deems necessary.
Currently, nearly a hundred thousand Indonesian citizen live and work in the UAE either as professionals, skilled labour, formal or non-formal worker as well as students.
The Minister of Justice and Human Rights of Indonesia along with three of his Director Generals and other member of delegation is in UAE at 1 – 3 February 2014 for the Agreements signing as well as meetings with their UAE counterparts to seek deeper cooperation between the two countries.
